Bio
Philip James de Vries is a Toronto-based musician who blends the experimental technicalities of electronic production with the power of persuasive melody; often using organic recordings of his own performances on live instruments to create emotive palettes of diverse sound that cannot be defined by a single genre. While de Vries’ productions vary widely, through his unique and thought-provoking approach to electronic music he consciously avoids creative stagnation, constantly moving forward in search of new sounds and emotions. Despite their sonic variety, the works of Philip James de Vries are unified through melodies and harmonies that are distinctly euphoric and nostalgic, favouring ethereal depth over shallower hedonistic tendencies.
In addition to being a producer & musician, I have done music scoring for film and theatre, and was a judge for the 2013 Canadian JUNO awards.
I am also the managing editor at Studiofeed.com, and a contributing freelance writer at Exclaim Magazine, and Earmilk.com.
A famous book once read, “Judge not, that you be not judged, for with what judgment you judge, you will be judged.”
I attempt to apply this philosophy to all of my creative work, in accordance with the artistic movement known as “vaguism.”
